Is Mold Damage Covered by Homeowner’s Insurance?
Short answer: sometimes. Long answer: it depends entirely on what caused the mold.
Usually Covered
- Burst pipes
- Sudden, accidental washing machine or dishwasher overflows
- Ice dam roof leaks (a common Akron winter cause)
- Storm damage that lets water in (wind, hail, fallen tree)
- Sewer backups (if you have the rider)
Usually NOT Covered
- Long-term humidity
- Slow leaks the homeowner should have noticed (gradual damage exclusion)
- Flood (from rising water — requires separate flood insurance)
- Lack of maintenance (gutters not cleaned, etc.)
- Neglect after a known issue
Akron-Specific Insurance Notes
Most Akron-common policies (State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, Erie, Westfield) include a mold cap — usually $5,000 to $10,000 for remediation costs even when the underlying water event is covered. If your job is bigger than the cap, you’ll be paying the difference out of pocket. Always read the mold endorsement on your policy.
Filing the Claim
Before you file: document everything with photos, get a remediator’s written estimate, and call your agent before you commit to any work. The remediator can usually help you navigate the claim process — most have experience with the common Akron carriers.
